Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
